Meet Rita!

Meet Rita, a gentle 1-year-old Dachshund with the sweetest soul and a heart that’s learning how to trust.

Weighing in at just 15 pounds, this shy little lady is blossoming in her foster home. Though she’s still working on gaining confidence, she adores snuggling up on the couch or bed once she’s bonded with you.

Rita is fully potty trained, gets along well with other dogs, and has met older kids with no issues. She hasn’t met any cats yet, but her overall demeanour is quiet and cautious. Rita thrives in calm, patient environments and is making incredible progress every day. Rita is not a candidate for living in a bustling city and becomes paralysed when leashed. While this is something that can be worked on with time, Rita’s forever family need to be aware that she needs patience and love to continue building her confidence.

Rita finds comfort in being outdoors and enjoys spending time in the yard—especially when she gets to watch (and enthusiastically chase!) squirrels. Because she’s still skittish and prone to bolting when approached, a securely fenced yard is a must for her safety. When left home alone, Rita doesn’t get into any trouble when left free roaming, but she prefers to sleep and chill in her crate, even if the door is open. Her crate is her safe place.

Rita has come a long way, and while she still startles easily and may walk away when approached, she’s also beginning to lean into affection and trust. With a little time and a lot of love, this sweet girl is going to make an incredible companion.

Rita is currently being fostered in Austin, TX. She is available for adoption in Texas and Northeastern states.
